HCM\u00a0CITY\u00a0\u2014 A government inspection team drawn from various agencies visited B\u00ecnh \u0110i\u1ec1n Market on Thursday night to assess food safety at HCM City\u2019s largest wholesale market.<\/p>\n

The delegation led by the head of the city People’s Council\u2019s cultural and social affairs\u00a0division, Cao Thanh B\u00ecnh, spent five hours to check the origins of goods sold at the market and take samples\u00a0of pork for testing.<\/p>\n

No food safety violations were detected.<\/p>\n

Nguy\u1ec5n \u0110\u0103ng Ph\u00fa, deputy director of the B\u00ecnh \u0110i\u1ec1n Market Management and Trading Company, said 2,500 tonnes of goods are brought in daily and trading is worth VN\u0110150 billion (US$5.9 million).<\/p>\n

The market supplies 35 per cent of the city\u2019s total cattle meat and 70 per cent of seafood consumed in the city and its surrounding areas.<\/p>\n

Animal products brought from various provinces to the city are screened by veterinary management agencies there, ensuring origin and disease prevention, but agricultural and food products are not monitored at the cultivation and processing stages, he said.<\/p>\n

The company regularly checks the quality of goods\u00a0at the market and\u00a0takes samples\u00a0for testing, he said.<\/p>\n

More than 900 food\u00a0samples\u00a0were\u00a0tested\u00a0in the first six months of the year and most met safety standards, he said.<\/p>\n

He expressed concern about the persistent illegal trading in the residential areas near the market and areas along Nguy\u1ec5n V\u0103n Linh and Qu\u1ea3n Tr\u1ecdng Linh streets in District 8 and B\u00ecnh Ch\u00e1nh District, posing safety and hygiene risks.<\/p>\n

B\u00ecnh pointed\u00a0out that city\u00a0consumers get safe food with clear origins as the wholesale market tightens oversight, urged local authorities to crack down on these illegal sellers to ensure safety.<\/p>\n
